Learn About Cannabidiol CBD

What is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol or CBD is a natural constituent of the cannabis plant.

How does CBD work?

All cannabinoids, including CBD, produce effects when they bind to certain receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The two most well-known of these are the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors found throughout the body and in the brain manipulate coordination, movement, emotions, mood, thinking, appetite, memories, and other functions. THC attaches to these receptors. CB2 receptors are most common in the immune system and are closely associated with inflammation and pain.

Although researchers once believed that CBD attached to these CB receptors, it now appears that CBD directs the body to use more of its own, naturally produced cannabinoids.

Is CBD legal in the USA?

Since the enactment of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and hemp-derived products are legal to produce, sell, and consume throughout all 50 states. These products must be derived from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3 percent THC (dry weight). That being said, states can still decide if they want to allow the sale and production of hemp-based products.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is the term used to describe a sublingual tincture of CBD. A CBD oil or tincture is made by mixing a CBD extract from a cannabis plant into a base like alcohol or hemp seed oil. The CBD oil is meant to be held under the tongue and absorbed directly. A sublingual absorption provides a faster effect than absorption via the stomach (i.e. gel capsules, edibles).

What are terpenes?

Terpenes are aromatic organic hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants. There are around 200 terpenes in cannabis. Terpenes are what give cannabis its distinct aroma and flavor. Terpenes have beneficial effects and work together with cannabinoids like CBD and THC – this relationship is sometimes called the entourage effect.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system identified by researchers in the early 1990s. The endocannabinoid includes a collection of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes involved in the production and break down of endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring cannabinoids found within the human body. The two most studied endocannabinoids are anandamide and 2-AG. The two most studies cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are located mostly in the brain and CB2 receptors are located mostly throughout the immune system.

Why use CBD?

People are finding that CBD is useful for many conditions which have not responded well to conventional treatments. New ailments which CBD can help treat are being discovered every day. However, the most common uses of CBD are treatment of chronic pain, anxiety, and epilepsy.
